Roddy

Sometimes it’s a pain in the ass having to take Molten out for one last walk before bed. Rain, snow, wind, you name it. But the late-night walk round the block is just par for the course when you have a furry friend in your life.

As we were walking, I couldn’t help but start talking to Molten, telling him all about Kyle. Call me crazy if you want, but I think animals definitely can understand their human companions, if not literally then on some kind of emotional level.

Anyway.

We were just about to head back inside our building when I heard a voice.

It was Kyle.

But he didn’t sound like the cheerful, quirky and happy Kyle that I had gotten to know.

No, he sounded upset, stressed, and in danger…

I rushed across the road towards him and soon saw that he was with another man. It was Trey. I just knew it. The creep had somehow found out where he was staying and come to cause him anguish.

Well, that simply was not going to be allowed to happen on my watch. No way, no chance, not now or ever.

“I said… Let. Him. Go,” I said, sizing Trey up and realizing that a one-on-one fight between us shouldn’t be too difficult if it came to it. “I’ll count to three, then I will proceed to do everything I can to ensure my friend’s safety.”

Trey, to my disgust, simply laughed.

His cackling, stupid laugh almost made me want to punch him into the next block, but I knew I had to keep my cool.

Violence was always a last resort.

In the blink of an eye though, he flung himself forward at me, catching me with a cheap shot to the side of my head, temporarily disorienting me.

“Not so tough now, you big dork,” Trey said, spinning around and landing three quick punches to my kidney, causing me to cry out in pain. “All brawn and no brains. Pathetic. This is the guy you choose over me, Kyle?”

“Roddy is twice the man you could ever be!” Kyle cried out.

Even in pain from Trey’s cheap shots, it felt good to hear Kyle speak about me like that. Of course, what Trey didn’t know was that my background in college football had meant that I was used to taking big hits from even the most cunning, down and dirty opposition players.

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” I said, straightening up, holding my hands in front of my face in a classic boxing stance and staring right into Trey’s eyes. “Come at me.”

I could see that Trey wanted to take me out.

I felt the same way towards him.

All I knew was that I would do anything, absolutely anything, to protect Kyle and keep him out of this fucking asshole’s clutches.

Trey stepped in and threw a right hook, just skimming past me as I ducked and leant out of the way. Exposed from throwing and missing, I took my chance and peppered Trey with two sharp, spiteful jabs directly to his face.
